We all love that feeling of finding a crisp $20 bill we forgot in a jacket pocket, right? A little gift from Past You that can turn your whole day around.
One of my favorite Lazy Genius Principles is Ask the Magic Question which simply means asking what you can do now to make something easier later. Answering the magic question in small or large ways is a gift to your future self.
I first implemented the magic question with meal planning.
Simply choosing meals ahead of time in order to make sure we have the ingredients has saved me from decision fatigue. Taking it a step further, prepping ingredients before dinner time has made the pre-dinner witching hour easier on many days.
Since then, I’ve found plenty of other ways that doing something small now can be a gift to my future self.
At Home
Preparing for the next season. This afternoon, I cleaned out the entryway closet to make room for winter gear. Even though it’s 60 degrees outside, tucking away the summer stuff and making cold-weather gear easy to find is something Future Me will appreciate when winter inevitably surprises me.
Running the dishwasher at night. Even if it isn't full, running it before bed keeps me from angrily starting the day with dirty dishes.
Clearing the kitchen counters before grocery shopping. Making sure I have somewhere to put all the bags when I get home makes unloading groceries so much easier.
Personally
Keeping track of my reading list. I use Goodreads to track my to-be-read (TBR) list and a website that cross-references it with Libby to create an on-demand reading queue. It's a little thing that helps keep me from falling into a reading slump.
Saving coffee gift cards. Storing up coffee gift cards throughout the year in an app means I'm ready for those early-morning weekend baseball tournaments all summer.
Choosing clothes the night before. On busy mornings, one less decision makes the whole routine run more smoothly.
With Money
Setting up automatic bill payments. Putting many of our bills on autopay saves money on late fees and spares me the panic of remembering something is due at an inconvenient time.
Setting reminders to cancel subscriptions. A reminder on my phone to cancel a free trial or subscription we no longer need saves me from unintended expenses.
Saving credit card cash back. I set aside our credit card cash-back rewards throughout the year to use for Christmas and other gift shopping.
As you can see, there are plenty of small ways to give a gift to your future self. Some take only a few minutes, while others require a little planning. But they all have something in common: they make life a little easier for the person you'll be tomorrow.
Give a Gift to Future You with Good Help Organizing
Is there a project you've been meaning to tackle for months? A closet that won't close, a basement that feels overwhelming, or a pile of paperwork that's taking up more mental space than physical space?
You don't have to do it all yourself. And you don't have to wait until you have more time, energy, or motivation.
That's why I'm offering my Gift to Future You promotion through November 6, 2026.
Pay for a three-hour organizing session by November 6, and I'll add an extra 30 minutes at no additional charge. That's 3.5 hours of Good Help Organizing to put toward a project that's been on your mind.
You'll have until February 28, 2027, to use your session, so you can book now and schedule the work for a time that makes sense for you.
What could you do with that gift?
Make the transition from fall to winter easier by organizing your entryway, mudroom, or seasonal gear.
Declutter Christmas decorations you no longer use.
Put away holiday decorations and reset your home for the rest of winter.
Reclaim your guest room so it can be used for more than storing things.
Freshen up your kitchen cabinets or pantry to make everyday routines easier.
Finally tackle another project that's been stressing you out.
The goal isn't a picture-perfect home. It's a home that works better for you, with less clutter, less frustration, and fewer things weighing on your mind.
We'll start with a free consultation to talk about your project and make sure we're a good fit before scheduling your session. And sometimes, simply knowing that help is on the calendar can bring a little relief.
