Strategic Organization Vol. 6

Calming Chaos Under the Sink

The under-sink area is often the forgotten child of home organization, a dark and cluttered abyss filled with cleaning supplies, grocery bags, and long-forgotten items. But this small space has enormous potential to streamline your daily routine and keep your kitchen or bathroom looking pristine. With a little effort and some smart organizing strategies, you can transform your under-sink chaos into a functional and tidy space.

Let’s dive into the essentials of under-sink organization and reclaim that valuable space.

Smart Under-Sink Organizing Tips:

  • Declutter First: Start by emptying everything from under the sink. Sort through the items and decide what to keep, toss, or relocate. Remember, this space should be reserved for essentials that aid in the functioning of the room, whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room.

  • Use The Right Containers: This can be a tricky one as there isn’t a “right” container, but there are better and worse containers. People have wildly different preferences when it comes to materials, but for this particular space I recommend something that allows you to see the contents. This could be clear, wire, or mesh, but please don’t use opaque containers here!

  • Maximize Vertical Space: I recommend tiered organizers and drawers to make use of the vertical space. Some people like stackable bins with lids, but drawers are better here as you don’t have to get everything out to access your items.

  • Think Multi-Purpose: Use organizers that serve multiple functions, such as a lazy Susan or pull-out drawers, to make accessing items easier and more efficient. Tall bottles of cleaners work great in a rimmed lazy Susan because you can spin it to access what you need, while two-level drawers work great for soaps and rags. Hooks inside the doors can be used for damp rags, rubber gloves, or anything else you need to access quickly.

  • Install a Tension Rod: A tension rod can be a game-changer for under-sink organization. Hang spray bottles on the rod to free up space on the cabinet floor. (This is not just for under sinks; it can work great in a laundry room or linen closet, too!)

  • Give Everything a Home: Rather than just shoving everything in, give each type of item a home base, for instance cleaners in one area, sponges and rags in another. Use labels to categorize and identify items quickly if that helps you or your family members to find them and put them away.

  • Avoid Storing Hazardous Materials: Under-sink areas can get damp, so it’s not the best place for storing hazardous materials like paint, chemicals, or anything flammable. Keep these in a more appropriate location, like a garage or utility closet.

  • Protect Against Leaks: Use a waterproof mat or liner on the bottom of the cabinet to protect it from potential leaks or spills. Ask me how I know.

  • Regular Maintenance: Organization isn’t usually one-and-done. Sorry! Periodically go through your under-sink space to ensure it stays organized. Adjust storage solutions as needed and keep only what you regularly use.

By following these tips, you can transform your under-sink area from a cluttered mess into a streamlined, efficient space. You can Be Boss of the Stuff Under Your Sink!

After: Purged, categorized, and used vertical space for small items.

Before: Fairly organized, just needs a refresher.

After: Purged and tidied. Notice the mesh drawers for easy access.
